All this talk over the past few Saturdays about Woodstock, but it was neither the first nor the last big American music festival. The Big Sur festival ran from 1964-71, the 1969 edition running only a month after Woodstock.
This album is from the last one, held in 1971 and featuring Woodstock alumni Joan Baez and Blood, Sweat and Tears along with Kris Kristofferson, Taj Mahal, and Mickey Newbury.
I’m not a Joan Baez fan, but the rest of the album is pretty tasty. Check out this cut from Taj Mahal:
This one is a steal at around ten bucks for all that Newbury/Kristofferson/Taj Mahal goodness. Happy hunting.

Hadn’t heard of that festival or that song by Taj Mahal. (Shocking I know.) Given the spare, folksy sound that is becoming so popular again, I bet that song would do great if released now.

Taj is still out there. If you’re up for a road trip you can catch him in Santa Barbara soon: http://www.tajblues.com/
