Choose and Defend: Planes, Trains, or Automobiles?

I fear I’ve tipped my hand with this week’s Choose and Defend. Earlier this week I launched into a musical rant about how much I hate airlines, so you know they aren’t going to get my vote.

But don’t let that sway you. Maybe you can overlook all of the inconveniences and still see the shimmering glory of the jet age. Security, baggage claim, and sitting around gates aside, airlines remain our fastest mode of travel, after all.

Regardless, in order to play Choose and Defend you must follow two simple rules: 1) Choose one of the following, and only one; 2) Defend your choice in the comments section. Failure to follow either of these rules will result in waking up with your hand between two pillows.

Assuming time is not an issue, would you prefer to travel cross country via:

  1. Seeing how I am posting this comment smushed in the horrid airplane middle seat on my way to Seattle with a backache already sending pains down my left leg I am NOT choosing plane. Then seeing how I am fresh off a 4 day trek through the south in a 1967 Nova with no air conditioning that had temperatures topping out at 120 degrees in the cabin I am NOT choosing automobile. So what does that leave me? Well, until Jetson-style flying cars are invented I am going with trains and you can find me in the bar car.

  2. I’m going to go with automobiles. I’m a fat guy, and something of a control freak, so I’m happy to trade any time I’d save for comfort in my seat and control of my trip.

  3. Automobiles all the way. Don’t get me wrong, trains are great, in fact, we recently kicked around the idea of taking one to Lancaster sometime next month.

However, IF your car has A/c and heat and a CD player, auto wins hands down.
    Because:
If you happen to see something interesting while driving, you can make your screeching right turn and go check it out at your leisure. You can choose where to stop and eat. (tip: don’t order the ribs at the family restaurant in Ohio.) You can simply pull over any time you want to stretch and get a little fresh air. If it is a long trip you can always find that one haunted rest stop. You can stop in little towns and take 8 million pictures to bore the shit out of your friends with. Oh, so many more options in your own car, I could go on and on, but I am pretty sure my hand is not in pillow jail at this point.

Yeah, airlines. NOBODY loves you anymore. And that is sad, because you used to be so shiny and friendly and smart and lovable.

  4. If it’s a trip with no destination in mind, then the car would be my choice. But if it’s to get to a particular destination, then I’d fly. I wouldn’t take the train at all because it’s not as flexible as the car and only a slower version of the plane.
