Deep Cuts: Songs For Breaking Stuff

Breaking stuff gets a bad rap.

When music breaks through my crusty exterior and exposes my gooey nougat center, I may be uncomfortable for a few minutes but inevitably I’m grateful. Feeling things is a nice change of pace.

Not that all feelings are welcome. Broken hearts are miserable, for example, and the feeling of pain accompanying a hunk of broken glass in the foot ain’t so great, either.

But there are plenty of good things to break: habits, routines, prejudices. So get to it. It’s a new year, a new start. Go break stuff.

“Breaking Glass,” David Bowie.

“Breaking Up the Girl,” Garbage.

“First You Break It,” Filter.

“I Am Trying To Break Your Heart,” Wilco.

“Nookie/Break Stuff,” Richard Cheese.

“Break Down the Door,” The Specials.

“Breakin’ the Law,” The New Pornographers.

“When the Levee Breaks,” Memphis Minnie.

There you have it: Eight songs for breaking stuff. What did I miss? I’m listening.
