Now and then you gotta step back and admire how far we’ve come as a society. Oh, don’t get me wrong: I know we have serious problems and there’s a long way to go, but in 2018 you’d never see a group of leggy babes named the Golddiggers calling Dean Martin “daddy” on network television:

That being said, I’m all kinds of nostalgic for albums like this because when I was a kid they simply meant Christmas. I didn’t know what a “gold digger” was, and of course I’d address my wish list to my daddy–there was nothing creepy about that. If I have a point, I guess it’s this: Judging 1968 by 2018 standards is a losing proposition, but if this record dropped this year whoo! So yeah, we’ve come a long way in 50 years.

The Golddiggers’ We Need a Little Christmas will cost you somewhere in the 5-10 dollar range, but if you’re lucky you might find it at a yard sale or charity shop copy for a buck or two. Happy hunting, and Merry Christmas.

I would have been 13 when we watched Dean with his perpetual drink and cigarette in hand and babe in arms. When I say We, I mean the whole family. We loved that show, part silliness, part sophistication we wished we had. I was too innocent (dumb?) to know what a gold-digger was but I sure got the message that it was better to a beautiful, leggy blonde than not. Thanks for reminding me there’s a reason I was, and to some extent still am, so fucked up, about what matters. It will take more than my lifetime to shed that societal norm.
