What do you make? Too many people blurt “I don’t make anything, I’m not creative” without recognizing just how engaged in making things they really are. Tying flies, knitting sweaters, scrapbooking, doodling, working up a pun, gardening, redecorating a room, pulling a dent –there’s no end to the things we make but disregard because they’re not “art.”
But whether you’re writing a poem or baking a pie, the resulting sense of satisfaction remains the same. “I made this. It didn’t exist, and now it does.” What a great feeling.
So be proud of the things you make, and make more of them. The world is a better place because of your good work.
Anyway, songs for making things:
“Making Flippy Floppy,” Talking Heads.
“Making Plans For Nigel,” XTC.
“Make It Home,” Juliana Hatfield.
“Pretty Girls Make Graves,” The Smiths.
“Make Fire,” Occult Wisdom.
“Make A Circuit With Me,” The Polecats.
“How To Make A Monster,” Rob Zombie.
“I Can’t Make It,” The Small Faces.
There you have it: Seven songs for making stuff and one for when you just can’t. What did I miss? I’m listening.
