I’ve had a lot of names over the course of my life. I’ve been Jimmy, Jim, James, Jimbo, Jimmy Mac, Jaime, Jamie, and Hymes. I’ve been Mr. Stafford, Dad, Son, and a whole bunch of unprintable names that have been yelled out of car windows. If I would’ve written that Jim Croce song, I would’ve had to name it “I Got A Names.”
We’re not our names, and yet we are. Stevie Wonder isn’t Stevland Morris, and for all I know when he’s offstage Stevland Morris isn’t Stevie Wonder. I like my name, but then again I can’t imagine having a different one. It’s simply a part of me.
Anyway, songs for no names:
“What’s My Name,” The Clash.
“What’s Your Name,” Don & Juan.
“What’s Her Name Today?” Elvis Costello with Burt Bacharach.
“Never Named,” Soundgarden.
“Somebody Mentioned Your Name,” William Bell.
“Call Me Names,” The Specials.
“Is It My Name?” Todd Rundgren.
“Forget My Name,” Danko Jones.
There you have it: Eight songs with no name, and not one horse in the bunch. What did I miss? I’m listening.
