Flowers, they aren’t just for breakfast anymore. They aren’t good for just spite eating and Georgia O’Keefe porn, no. Our pistil and petal friends have inspired many songs over the years. Here are a few:
“New Rose,” The Damned. Not a deep cut, but come on — how could I not open with this?
“The Days Of Wine and Roses,” The Dream Syndicate. One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums.
“Flowers for Zoe,” Lenny Kravitz. From the indispensable Mama Said album. Never mind everything you think you know about Lenny Kravitz, this is one of the best albums ever made about a breakup.
“Daisy,” Stone Temple Pilots. From Tiny Music…, their most interesting album.
“Flowers of Romance,” Public Image Ltd. I love that this made Top of the Pops. What I would’ve given for a BBC station as a kid.
“Scarlet Begonias,” Grateful Dead
“Flowers of Guatemala,” R.E.M. One of my favorites from Athens’ finest.
“She Gave Good Sunflower,” The Black Crowes. From Amorica, one of the all-time great controversial album covers.
Now it’s time to let your flower playlist bloom. I’m listening.
Well, just for you we have an obscure little pop tune by Emitt Rhodes – “Fresh As A Daisy.” It’s quite possible that later in his music career, he also spite ate those sweet little blooms.

I always enjoy Build Me Up Buttercup by the Foundations 🙂 Also, I hang my head and remember listening to Dan Fogelberg’s Run for the Roses pretty regularly at one time….

If there’s someone out there who doesn’t enjoy “Build Me Up Buttercup” I don’t think I want to know him or her. (But you’re on your own on the Fogelberg.)
