Putting together a playlist of songs about moms isn’t very difficult. In fact, you could make a playlist of songs named “Mama” without ever resorting to “She’s A Bad Mama Jama.”
But anyway, moms loomed large – or at least one did — in this week’s piece, so you’re getting a playlist of mom songs this week:
“Easy Riding Mama,” Washboard Sam. It’ll make you loose, make you tight, make you shake it ’til broad daylight:
“Full On Kevin’s Mom,” Soundgarden. A Louder Than Love era classic.
“I Wanna Be Mama’d,” Jimmy Logsdon. Okay, but no diapers. That’s just weird.
“Always on the Run,” Lenny Kravitz. From the must-have Mama Said, one of my desert island discs.
“Does Your Mama Know About Me,” Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers. Classic, lesser-known Motown.
“Music For My Mother,” Funkadelic. 1970’s self-titled Funkadelic isn’t my favorite album in the George Clinton discography, but my least-favorite P-Funk is still better than 99.9 percent of all other records.
“Where Is My Mother,” Bob Marley & the Wailers. Early, early Bob, before he was a white American frat boy.
“My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama,” Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Just. Plain. Cool.
Okay, let’s hear it you bad mama jamas: what are your favorite “momma” songs? I’m listening.
I’m going to have to mention Stacy’s Mom by Fountains of Wayne. That’s some good cheese. And I’ve always loved Syvia’s Mother by Dr Hook. Ooooh! Mama by Genesis! I could go on, but won’t…because you’re right…there are a LOT of mother songs! It is because we are so awesome. You’re welcome.

Probably one of the sweetest songs about a mum – John Lennon’s ‘Julia’.

Outstanding choice. Lennon was a master of the mother song, wasn’t he?

Genisis “Mama” with Phil Collins seems to, um, have some issues, I think?

Maybe one or two, yes. It still kills me that Genesis in that era could make such interesting music and such total dreck on the same album.
