Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band isn’t my favorite Beatles album. Yes it is. No it isn’t. What time is it?
My favorite Beatles album is “Rubber Soul and everything that came out after that.” Which one sits in the number one slot really just depends on my mood. I guess if you’re going to hold a Blue Meanie to my head I’d go with the White Album, but come on — they’re all great.
But Sgt. Pepper is a special one, both musically and personally. I’ve always had an affinity with this album because we’re the same age, give or take a couple of months. I literally grew up listening to this record in the basements and bedrooms of my friends, at school chorus performances, and whenever and wherever it blared from my radio.
So yeah, I was thrilled to be assigned an anniversary piece on Sgt. Pepper, but I was intimidated, too. What the heck can I add to 50 years of scholarly research on one of the greatest albums of all time? Answer: Nothing, so I didn’t. Instead I had a little fun and put together some Sgt. Pepper trivia for you.
