Deep Cuts: Mustang Songs

66mustalI never bought my dream vintage Mustang, but when Ford introduced the retro body style in 2005 I couldn’t wait to buy one.

I’ve had it 10 years now, and I’ve loved every minute of it. Ford got it absolutely right with the 2005-2006 model years.

Mustang people are kind of nuts. For 50 years they’ve been fiercely loyal to the car, even when it was no more than a glorified Pinto or Probe. And because we love our rides so much, the Mustang has shown up in lots of songs. Here are a few:

“Ford Mustang,” Serge Gainsbourg. My pick for the greatest of all Mustang songs. Weird, sexy…weird.

“Mustang Sally,” Wilson Pickett. The one you totally expected to see on this list.

“Mustang Sally Bought a GTO,” John Lee Hooker. The response to the one you totally expected to see on this list. How cool is John Lee Hooker?

“Mustang Ford,” T. Rex. Another oddball, but most of what Marc Bolan did was a bit odd.

“Black Sunshine,” White Zombie. I’m tempted to paint my Stang just so that I can call it Black Sunshine.

“My Mustang Ford,” Chuck Berry. You knew Chuck had to get in on the action.

“Wild, Wild Mustang,” Dick Dale. There are lots of Mustang songs in the hot rod genre. Here’s one of the greats.

“Mustang,” Link Wray. And here’s another one of the greats.

There you go — 8 songs to peel out to. Put the top down on your 5.0 so your Fro can blow and tell me what I missed. I’m listening.
