From the Stacks: Rap Reiplinger, ‘Poi Dog’

Rap Reiplinger Poi Dog front
I bought this album for one reason: that horrible album cover.

What I didn’t know at the time is that Rap Reiplinger is one of Hawaii’s most beloved comedians, or was at least. Apparently he died of a cocaine overdose back in 1982 at the age of 33.

Honestly, I was a little disappointed that this was a comedy album. With that cover and a name like Reiplinger, I was really hoping for some kind of twisted krautrock, but there you go.

So here’s the question: Knowing that this is a comedy record and assuming that Rap was probably representing several of his wacky characters with his unique attire, does this sleeve qualify for the Bad Album Cover Hall of Fame? I’m listening.

  1. Tough call when it is intended to be bad. NO, I don’t think it belongs in the BACHOF – that star is reserved for the groups who really thought their album cover was the shit. Comedy albums….you are going to have to create a new award category, I think.
