Deep Cuts: Songs For Helpers

“Look for the helpers” reads a popular Mr. Rogers meme. I’m down with that. Even with all my grousing about unappreciative weasels, the truth is that I like helping out when I can. I suspect that most people do.

The challenge, of course, is this: What the heck can we do to help? None of us can individually reverse climate change, heal the rifts dividing us, cure cancer, or prevent another Kid Rock album. The world’s problems are just too big for one Mr. Helper.

But we can do more than we think to make the world better. We can put away our grocery carts, let other drivers merge, and listen without judgement. We can tip when we’re out and wash our own dishes when we’re in. In short, we can be nice. That’s probably the biggest help of all.

Anyway, songs for helpers:

“I Want To Help You Ann,” The Lyres.

“Let’s All Help the Cowboys Sing the Blues,” Waylon Jennings.

“Please Help Me I’m Falling,” Hank Locklin.

“Sgt. Rock (Is Going To Help Me),” XTC.

“Who’s Gonna Help Brother Get Further?” Lee Dorsey.

“With A Little Help,” World Of Oz.

“With You There To Help Me,” Jethro Tull.

“Help Me,” Johnny Cash.

There you have it: Eight songs for helpers. What did I miss? Help me out here. I’m listening.
