Where did all the velvet go? When I was a kid it was everywhere: furniture, car interiors, suits. Now? No velvet.
Oh, we have Polar Fleece. We have stretchy denim. Vegan leather. But velvet? Not so much.
And it’s such a seemingly decadent fabric. Nothing says “I’m loud, proud, and tacky” like a velvet sport coat.
I miss velvet. Fortunately, I have a bunch of velvet songs:
“Velvet Goldmine,” David Bowie.
“Clowns On Velvet,” Frank Zappa.
“Velvet Green,” Jethro Tull.
“Velvet Rabbit,” Kimya Dawson.
“Velvet,” Fergie.
“I Like You In Velvet,” Malcolm McLaren and the Bootzilla Orchestra.
“Velvet Days,” Kristin Hersh.
“The Girl In the Blue Velvet Band,” Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys.
There you have it: Eight plush songs that aren’t “Plush.” What did I miss? I’m listening.
