Every fall a bunch of people with more money than sense converge on little Carlisle, Pennsylvania to satisfy their appetites for rust and busted knuckles. We’re talking old car junkies here, and the event is the Fall Carlisle Collector Car Swap Meet.
The event is half actual swap meet, half Auto Mecca with collector cars stretching as far as the eye can see. What’s cool about it is that you’ll find the overpriced hot rods that you see on the cable car shows, but you can also find that trim hardware you’re missing for your ’68 Plymouth.
So what’s that have to do with you? Well, that’s where I am right now–not actually right now, but a week from the moment that I am writing this, so I’m putting this playlist together in anticipation of my absence.
And if I’m going to put together a playlist of collector cars, what better way to start it off than with arguably the very first rock and roll song, “Rocket 88” by Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats. Let’s roll!
“Rocket 88,” Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats.
“Jaguar,” The Who.
“Back Seat ’38 Dodge,” Opus 1.
“Pontiac Blues,” Sonny Boy Williamson and the Yardbirds.
“1965 GTO,” Amazing Royal Crowns.
“Bucket T,” The Who.
“Carl Perkins’ Cadillac,” Drive-By Truckers.
“Ford Mustang,” Serge Gainsbourg.
There you have it: Eight songs that make you go vroom. What did I miss? I’m listening.
