Here’s one for the “interesting footnotes” section of your record collection.
Cat Mother and the All Night Newsboys stuck around for three more albums after this, their 1969 debut. The Street Giveth…and the Street Taketh Away also generated a top 40 single with “Good Old Rock’n Roll:”
Four albums and a top 40 single counts as a respectable career, but it’s Cat Mother’s association with Jimi Hendrix that makes the band (and this record in particular) a great music trivia question. The band opened for Hendrix, shared a manager with him, and most importantly recruited Jimi to produce The Street Giveth. It’s one of only two non-Hendrix albums that Jimi produced.
It’s not a great album but it’s good, and perhaps more importantly it’s a great conversation piece to add to your stacks. Expect to pay in the 5-10 dollar range. Happy hunting.
