From The Stacks: ‘Prestige Modern Jazz Carnival’

This might be the coolest thing I own that I know nothing about.

I found this Japanese import in a record store’s 45 bin. The package contains four one-sided seven-inch flexi discs, one each for the four artists listed on the book’s cover. Yes, book cover. Inside are several pages of photos and texts about Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, Clifford Brown, Milt Jackson, and Sonny Rollins (okay so one of those discs must be a twofer). Come on!

Unfortunately, I can’t read kanji so I have no idea what the booklet says, and I won’t play the flexi discs because those suckers are easy to damage. (Remember records on the backs of cereal boxes? Those are flexi discs.) So what do I have? I don’t know. Can’t read it, can’t listen to it, can’t find any information about it online. At least in the U.S. this is a rare one, and given that jazz collectors are kind of crazy I’m surprised I can’t find any info.

Have you ever seen this beast? Know anything about it? Leave me a comment. The suspense is killing me.
