Online shopping is convenient, but I’m really going to miss stores. Maybe if I was a well-adjusted person I’d have better places to hang out, but bookstores, record stores, junk shops, and diners (which are pancake stores, come on) account for a significant part of my social interaction. There’s no fun in clicking “add to cart” when shopping for vinyl–no thrill of the hunt, no delight at finding that grail album in the wild, no small talk with people who share my interests. It’s just a transaction.
We’re all going to miss stores when we’re surrounded by Amazon boxes and bubble wrap but with nobody to talk to except our ghosty social media friends, so enjoy your local shops while you still can.
“Drug Store Truck Drivin’ Man,” Gram Parsons.
“Thrift Store Find,” Misterholmes and the Brotherhood.
“Macy’s Window,” Paul Revere and the Raiders.
“Drug Store Woman,” John Lee Hooker.
“Kmart Blues,” Screeching Weasel.
“Anarchist Bookstore Part 1,” MC Paul Barman.
“Thrift Store Chair,” Everclear.
“Go To Rhino Records,” Wild Man Fischer.
There you have it: Eight songs to keep you occupied while you’re working part time at the five and dime. What did I miss? I’m listening.
“Lost in the Supermarket” – The Clash
“Baby’s Gone Shopping” – Jimmy Buffett
“The Video Shop” – The Kinks
“Cold Gin” – KISS
“Shopping for Dresses” – Merle Haggard
“Window Shopping” – George Jones
“Hardware Store” – Weird Al Yankovic
“I Found a Million Dollar Baby (in a Five and Ten Cent Store)” – Bing Crosby
“Been Caught Stealing” – Jane’s Addiction
“Candy Store Rock” – Led Zeppelin

I can’t believe I missed “Lost in the Supermarket.” I’m turning in my record geek card.
