Deep Cuts

Deep Cuts: Life Songs

What is this life thing anyway? Mother Love Bone said that life is what you make it. Lennon said it’s what happens when you’re busy making other plans. Sinatra noted its schizophrenic nature (“You’re riding high in April / Shot down in May”).

I sure as heck don’t know what life is all about, but I’m pretty sure that a big part of it is finding something that fulfills you. Maybe that’s religion or charity work. Maybe it’s record collecting, or stereo gear. Maybe it’s just grinding out push-ups.

If you’re looking for something to enrich your life, take a shot at making art: painting, writing, music, dance, theater, ceramics. Or build things. Making things is very fulfilling.

Anyway, here’s a “Life Is” playlist:

“Life is Real (Song for Lennon),” Queen.

“Life is White,” Big Star.

“Life is a Long Song,” Jethro Tull.

“Life is Like a Musical,” Outkast.

“Life is Wild,” The Clash.

“Life is Good in the Greenhouse,” XTC.

“Life is So Beautiful,” The Smithereens.

“Life is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back,” Meat Loaf.

There you have it: Eight songs describing what life is. What did I miss? I’m listening.

  1. There’s nothing like arriving late to the party, but here I am!

    Pop Life – Prince
    Street Life – Roxy Music
Life is Just a Fantasy – Aldo Nova
(Life is Just a) Paper Moon
Wild, Wild Life – Talking Heads

I suppose these are not the deepest cuts…but, neither are they mainstream, with the exception of Aldo Nova’s contribution, and it just screamed to make the list.
