A recent Atlantic Monthly article suggesting that humans domesticated themselves by killing off the violent males in their midst sparked a short story idea. My story featured a town council meeting rather than our primate ancestors, but the gist was this: Beneath our fancy clothes and free will facades still lurks our monkey nature. I don’t how that makes you feel, but I find it comforting and a little hungry for a banana.
Anyway, monkey songs:
“The Smartest Monkeys,” XTC.
“Mickey’s Monkey,” Mother’s Finest.
“Monkey Man,” The Specials.
“Monkey Time,” Major Lance.
“Too Much Monkey Business,” Chuck Berry.
“Monkey Businessman,” Michael Manring.
“Monkey,” Robert Plant.
“Half Ass Monkey Boy,” Mother Love Bone.
There you have it: Eight songs that do the monkey. What did I miss? I’m listening.
“Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and Monkey” – The Beatles
“Tweeter and the Monkey Man” – The Traveling Wilburys
“Porcelain Monkey” – Warren Zevon
“Leave My Monkey Alone” – Warren Zevon
“Monkey Wash, Donkey Rinse” – Warren Zevon
“Monkey See, Monkey Do” – Ringo Starr
“Shock the Monkey” – Peter Gabriel
“Brass Monkey” – Beastie Boys
“You Made A Monkey Out Of Me” – Buck Owens
“Monkey in Your Soul” – Steely Dan
