• Lou Reed: An Appreciation

Well, it’s definitely not a surprise but it was still a shock to hear of Lou’s passing today. He was an immense talent and has a treasured place in my stacks. I wrote a little appreciation piece over on Good Men Project, and I welcome you to check it out: http://goodmenproject.com/arts/lou-reed-an-appreciation/

  • From the Stacks: Green Bullfrog

This is a cool little oddity for the Rainbow/Deep Purple fans. Basically it’s a 1970 supergroup album with all of the artists performing under pseudonyms. Here’s the roster:

  • Johnny Craig, Sacramento, 10/26/13

The former singer of Dance Gavin Dance and Emarosa came out strong tonight with a solid R&B flavored set that delighted his hometown fans.  I didn’t catch many photos, but you’re welcome to what I have:

  • From the Stacks: Grand Funk Railroad – E Pluribus Funk

I have been on a crazy Grand Funk tear lately. Damn, these guys were good. And huge! Grand Funk Railroad was playing to stadiums—stadiums—and now it’s almost like they never existed. There are two openly proud Grand Funk fans still standing: Homer Simpson and me.

  • Deep Cuts: Press Play When I’m Dead

Between this week’s memoir piece, my mother’s illness, and my ever-present awareness that I’m falling apart, death has been on my mind a lot lately. There’s nothing I hate more than going to a memorial service where there’s no hint of the deceased, just some stranger droning, “Although I didn’t know James, I understand that…

  • 148. Falling on My Head Like a Memory

We stayed with my father’s parents at their little house up in the Rocky Mountains. They lived in a small town named Evergreen, which was no more than a few shops and a couple of bars lining two lanes of blacktop. There was an Elks Lodge, too, and a lake that froze every winter and…

  • Whitechapel, Sacramento, 10/19/2013

Brutal. That’s all I need to say, but that’s never stopped me. Deathcore monsters Whitechapel opened for GWAR last night at Sacramento’s Ace of Spades, though you wouldn’t have guessed it from the crowd. The Knoxville band drew the biggest mosh pit, the most crowd surfing, the most pain. I don’t know what these guys…

  • Iron Reagan, Sacramento, 10/19/2013

I’d never heard of this band prior to stumbling into Sacramento’s Ace of Spades last night, but I was pleasantly surprised. From my seconds of intergooglewebtube research I’ve learned that they are a hardcore band out of Virginia, and they’ve only been together a year or so. They’d fit right in with any of the…

  • A Band of Orcs, Sacramento, 10/19/13

I’m an old fart, and I’ve been a music fan since I was a pup. I’ve seen it all, so it’s hard for a band to plaster a shit eating grin on my grouchy old fart face. A Band of Orcs didn’t have any problem, though. The Santa Cruz band opened a four band bill…

  • GWAR, Sacramento, 10/19/2013

One thousand people packed into Sacramento’s Ace of Spades tonight for a four bill show headlined by GWAR. The cartoon rockers brought the full show—the blood spitting gargoyles, the ball swinging henchmen, the whole bit—and the crowd loved it. More photos to come, including the crowd and the opening bands, but for now here’s GWAR:
